One of GIZ projects is Egyptian-German Joint Committee for Renewable Energy, Energy Efficiency, and Environmental Protection (JCEE) which was commissioned in 2008. The objective of the JCEE is to support sustainable development and building capacities of the Egyptian partner ministries and affiliated authorities, through the implementation of long-term strategies that synergies between RE, EE, and climate change. The Egyptian government has defined clear and dedicated goals in their national strategies. It aims to diversify the energy mix in favor of renewable resources; thus, it has set an ambitious target to achieve 20 % of generated electricity from renewable-based resources by 2022, and 42 % by 2035. However, the potentials for the reduction of CO2 emissions in the Egyptian electricity sector, on both supply and demand sides, are not utilized sufficiently. Relevant actors in the Egyptian energy sector, such as EETC Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC) and New and Renewable Energy Authority (NREA), could improve their planning and management skills to be able to integrate a high share of renewable energy into the national electricity transmission grid. Further know-how in site planning for renewable energy power plants. computer (software)-assisted expansion planning of electricity networks and integration of renewable energy and intelligent grid technologies (smart grid) into the network management can be acquired. In addition, the skills to carry out efficient and effective tendering and awarding processes in the electricity sector can be further developed. These causes shall be addressed through technical and process consultancy, as well as by implementing respective capacity building measures.
