In the second half of 2020, China will host the UN Biodiversity Conference (CBD COP 15; COP MOP 10; COP MOP 4) in Kunming. Parties are expected to agree on a post-2020 global biodiversity framework as a follow-up to the 2011-2020 Strategic Plan for Biodiversity. Since most of these targets will not be met, it is necessary to extend efforts and to agree on a robust post-2020 global biodiversity framework. Hosting the UN Biodiversity Conference in 2020 provides an excellent opportunity for China for triggering an ambitious national policy process on the conservation, restoration and sustainable use of biodiversity as well as on access and benefit sharing. On the other hand, the implementation of the UN Biodiversity Conference is an enormous organizational challenge for the recently 2018-reformed Ministry of Environment and Ecology (MEE). Further, the CBD COP 15 coincides with the German Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
