The Government of India is aiming for 175 GW of installed renewable energy capacity by 2022 out of which 160 GW will be constituted from wind and solar power systems. Two main challenges come hand in hand with high penetration of wind and solar systems installations that are variability and uncertainity. Variability and uncertainty make the generation from wind and solar PV project difficult to schedule and despatch. This causes difficulty in planning and managing overall balance of supply and demand. Additionally it imposes several other challenges in smooth grid operation and management. Green Energy Corridors (GEC) is an ambitious programme of Govt. of India to increase the capacity of Indian electricity grid to be able to take up larger amounts of electricity from variable sources of renewable energies.
